DAY ONE LET'S GO! With 80% of the world under some kid of restriction due to COVID-19, a lot of schools are closed and kids are at home. Why not say you've accomplished something coming out of this? In the next 30 days I'll be posting videos to my Youtube Channel as well as writing blog posts so that your child (whatever age) can drastically improve their reading. Here's my video in summary:
Main Point: Before you teach a child reading, you must assess WHERE THEY ARE.
How to do that: Use an automatic program or running records.
The automatic program that you will do with your child ages 2 - 8 (preK - second grade) can be found at www.abcmouse.com. Register for the free trial, get the assessment version free for 14 days, and give the assessment in 5 - 10 minute sessions.
For kids of all ages, use running records.
To put it simply, have the child read to you aloud. Follow along with them, while you mark on a sheet of paper (or copy of what they are reading) their mistakes. You can also do this with an e-book - you reading on the ipad, the child reading on a kindle for example. You will find they are making mistakes -- if you judge harshly. The only way the child can become a better reader is if you pick up on the little mistakes they are making - even if those mistakes don't change the meaning of the sentence. If you want to learn more about running records, and find out exactly what to work on to boost your child's reading, go to www.readinga-z.com. Many schools and teachers use this -- you can sign up for a free trial -- sometimes it can be wonky so if you have trouble just email them. You want the reading trial -- which may be listed under "RAZ". You'll see they also have science, writing, etc.
After you sign up, you'll see this videogame type screen, and there's so much to learn here. It's really a teacher's paradise. Perfect for homeschool parents. For now, skip to assessments, and get started!
I know, you need more information than that to get started. So tomorrow I will sit down with my children and record myself assessing them. You'll see exactly what you need to do!
